Mohammed Ali is one of the world’s most famous boxers. Born in 1942 as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., the boxer changed his name when he converted to Islam. Ali was surrounded by controversy when he evaded the draft that could have sent him to the Vietnam War, and he was absent from the boxing world for three years. Following the hiatus, Ali used his strong punches and lightening-fast reflexes to capture the heavyweight champion title an unprecedented three times. His determination is still evident today through his battle with Parkinson’s syndrome.

Ali is just as famous for his personality as he is his punches. The boxer would often say things to intimidate and worry his opponents, and he was known for boasting of his own talents. The theatrics worked, and thousands of people paid huge amounts of money to see the braggart fight. Many hoped he would lose because of his attitude, but Ali surprised them all by backing up his words with knock out punches.

America sure loves its sports stars. From LeBron James to Albert Pujols to Tom Brady, great athletes are elevated to a transcendent level of glory for their accomplishments on the court, pitch and field.

But before the age of cable tv, the Internet and mass media, sports legends didn’t quite get the recognition that they do now.

Lenny Moore was one of those athletes.

Moore, a running back from Penn State University, was drafted ninth overall in the 1956 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts.

He went on to play 12 seasons with the Colts, rushing for 5,174 yards and 63 touchdowns in his illustrious career. Moore, along with legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas, made the Colts one of the premier teams in professional football for nearly a decade. Moore was also named to seven Pro Bowls, and, later on, the NFL 1950s All-Decade Team. He was never able to win a championship, although he helped the Colts get to the big game in 1964, where they ultimately lost 27-0 to the Cleveland Browns.

The Reading, Pennsylvania, native earned a lot of nicknames throughout his career, most notably “Sputnik,” “The Reading Rambler” and “Lightning Lenny.”

Eddie Epstein, the author of “Dominance, the Best Seasons of Pro Football’s Greatest Teams,” labeled Moore as the “Marshall Faulk before Marshall Faulk.”

Moore, now 79, spends his time today working with young kids in Maryland.

Michael Schumacher is one of the most successful drivers on this planet. He is the most successful man to ever race in the sport of Formula 1. Schumacher won his first two World Championships with Benetton, before moving to Ferrari in order to rejuvenate the struggling side. Not everything went smoothly there, as an accident in 1999 robbed him of close to 6 months of his career. However, Schumcher returned faster and hungrier than ever. He won 5 World Championships in a row with Ferrari from 2000 to 2005. He almost won a 6th for the team, however he was denied by Renault’s Fernando Alonso.Confused? Here‘s a little help .

Schumacher holds many records in Formula 1. No one has won more than his SEVEN World Championships. He also has the most wins and second places in F1 history. No one has won a single race more times than Schumacher’s EIGHT wins in France. No one has appeared on the podium more times or driven more kilometers while being in first place.

Schumacher also holds the record for most points in an F1 season, before the new points system was established. He also has more podiums, pole positions, and fastest laps than any other driver.

Carl Lewis is among the greatest male United States Olympians of all-time. Voted as the “Sportsman of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee, Lewis won a total of ten medals in his Olympic career, including nine gold’s. Dominate from 1984 until 1996, Lewis could have won more if it was not for the US boycott of the 1980 games in Moscow.

Lewis burst onto the Olympic scene in 1984, winning four Gold medals on the track, tying an American record by the great Jesse Owens. Lewis won gold’s in the 100m, 200m, 4X100m relay and Long Jump. Lewis won three more medals at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, taking the gold in the 100m and Long Jump, and a silver in the 200m. Lewis won the 100m Gold after Canadian Ben Johnson was stripped of his win when he tested positives for steroids shortly after the race.

Lewis continued on his winning ways at the 1992 games in Barcelona, defending his title in the Long Jump and as part of the 4x100m relay team which won gold. In arguably his most impressive achievement, Lewis shocked experts at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta by upsetting world-record holder Mike Powell and winning Gold in the Long Jump for the fourth straight games.

It can be argued either way whether Babe Ruth was the greatest baseball player of all time. He certainly was one of the greatest home run hitters of all time and has the most recognizable name in the history of the game.

One way to judge the “Bambino” is to measure his popularity in the era that he played. Ruth was the biggest name in the sport when he played and he made the Yankees one of the most feared teams in the entire league. While he was not the fastest or most athletic of all the players, he still managed to perform at a very high level.

Year after year, in his prime, Ruth consistently led or was near the top of Major League baseball’s leaders in home runs, RBIs and batting average. He was an above average fielder and a fan favorite.

Other players throughout the history of baseball have eclipsed Ruth’s statistics, but that does not necessarily elevate them to the status of being the greatest baseball player of all time. Ted Williams hit for a higher batting average. Willie Mays was a much more complete player. Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s lifetime home run record.

Babe Ruth was the greatest baseball player of his time. Who knows how he would do if he was playing in today’s modern era. If not the greatest, Ruth must at least be considered in the top ten.

The list of athletes who can succeed at a high level in multiple sports is small. The list of athletes who can succeed in multiple sports at a professional level is even smaller. But how many athletes can play at the largest stage in multiple professional sports? Only one: Deion Sanders.

Deion Sanders was a Pro Football Hall of Fame player who also played in the MLB for nine years. He is the only player in history to hit a home run and score a touchdown in the same week.

In the NFL, Sanders predominately played cornerback, but his versatility allowed him to often play on the offensive side of the ball too.I was looking for more information and found it here. He played with a number of different teams and won the Super Bowl twice: once with the San Francisco 49ers in 1994 and once with the Dallas Cowboys in 1996. He made key plays in both Super Bowls, helping to lead his teams to victories.

In the MLB, Sanders played outfield. He played 641 games with four different teams. His best season was in 1992 with the Atlanta Braves, where he boasted a .304 batting average, stole 26 bases, and hit 14 triples, most in the MLB.

The heptathlon is a hard event to dominate, especially when it comes to Olympics. Made up of seven events (100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw, 800m), the event is a test of several different skill sets that few have the ability to master, as well as a test of endurance over two consecutive days. When it comes to the 20th century, few if any were able to dominate the event like American Jackie Joyner-Kersee did.

After winning a silver medal in the event at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Joyner-Kersee set a world record in the event at the 1988 games in Seoul, South Korea which still stands to this day. Kersee added a gold in the Long Jump event in Seoul as well.

Joyner-Kersee was able to successfully defend her gold in the Heptathlon at the 1992 games in Barcelona, Spain. To this day, she is the only woman to successful defend her Olympic gold in the event. She added a bronze in the Long Jump event at the games to become a multiple medalist for the second straight games.

While she was not able to participate in the Heptathlon event at the 1996 games in Atlanta due to injury, she did win a bronze medal in the Long Jump event, marking the four straight games she medaled at.
